Negro Folk Music in the New World
One of the truly important musical developments in modern world history was caused by the largely forced migration of great numbers of African Negroes to various parts of the Americas. These slaves, most of whom came from West Africa, brought with them their music and other features of their culture, which served to provide a common context for the partial continuation, at least, of the African traditions. The Negroes came into contact with European music of varying styles; their reactions to these styles and the resulting mixture of musics called into being a whole group of musical subcultures that have had an impact on all strata of twentieth-century music.
